Position Summary: The Social Services Manager manages the day-to-day operations of the Social Services program including the supervision and development of staff and the efficient and effective management of the program services to support the Huu-ay-aht First Nations Strategic Plan in daily consultation with the Director of Community Services. 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Designing, implementing and sustaining a health and wellness programming to improve the health of all Huu-ay-aht citizens (working in partnership with First Nations Health Authority and Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council).
  • Designing, implementing and sustaining cultural programs for all Huu-ay-aht citizens.
  • Designing, implementing and sustaining programs for youth (working in partnership with the education, employment and training departments).
  • Designing, implementing and sustaining social development programs on TSL with the goal of reducing the number of HFN citizens on Social Assistance.
  • Designing, implementing and sustaining Early Childhood Care and Education programs to support children under the age of 5, promoting family development and cultural knowledge transfer.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and neutrality at all times.
  • Managing the work unit and budget in accordance with company standards and performance expectations. 
  • Recruiting, coaching, evaluating and supporting assigned staff. 

Job Duties:

  • Provides leadership and strategic planning in the development and management of social services programming for HFN citizens. Areas include but are not limited to: health (physical and mental), social development (social assistance, funerals and crisis grants), healthy families, elders, youth, early childhood programs, and culture initiatives to manage the ongoing growth and development citizens throughout all segments of the population.
  • Builds stronger partnerships between HFN external partners to enhance HFN’s ability to provide the most effective and efficient support to clients.
  • Supports the development of needed policy and procedural development in the Huu-ay-aht Social Services department.
  • Builds enhanced early childhood programs for both Paawats operations.
  • Attends citizen development committee meetings as technical advisor.
  • Supports and implements strategic initiatives defined in the Huu-ay-aht Strategic Plan.
  • Oversees 5 – 7 support staff.
  • Provides technical guidance to assigned staff.
  • Establishes work priorities for team and makes changes to work load as needed.
Qualifications 

Operational Requirements:

  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.
  • Some travel, including overnight and or weekends.  Possible US domestic travel.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness to work in Anacla Government Office 1-2 days per week.
  • Successful background check, including employment verification, reference checks, criminal record check, and education/credential verification.

 

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in upholding the HFN organizational Values:  Professionalism, Respect, Health, Effective Communication, Trust, Support.
  • Minimum diploma in social services related studies or field.
  • 5+ years’ experience in social services related program management.
  • Significant experience in culturally appropriate wellness programs.
  • Demonstrated and successful experience planning, organizing, managing and communicating activities.
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure funding and strategic partnerships in support of program objectives.
  • Ability to promote a performance-focused environment in alignment with the HFN’s values, culture and business goals.
