What is this position about?

 

Ocean Outfitters is looking to hire a full time fishing guide with a positive and enthusiastic personality capable of entertaining a myriad of guests from a variety of demographics and nationalities. Fishing is only one aspect of what we promote through our fishing excursions, therefore the candidate should subsequently possess a thorough knowledge of local ecology, indigenous and migratory wildlife common to our region, and a grasp of local First Nation’s history. Successful candidates have to be familiar with the local shoreline, its hazards, and will know how to safely operate a vessel in variable weather and sea conditions. They must provide a memorable fishing experience in Clayoquot Sound while ensuring the safety of our each of our guests.

Overall responsibility for our Adventure Tour program:

  • Safety of: passengers, the vessel, wildlife & the environment: Perform ethical & responsible wildlife viewing practices
  • Deliver the highest possible quality tour in an educational manner adhering to Ocean Outfitters standards
  • Upkeep and minor vessel maintenance
  • Maintain safety equipment and following safety practices set by Ocean Outfitters
  • Safe operation of the vessel in a punctual manner
  • Maintain positive relationships with staff
  • Work with our team to personalize each booking and support the Front End staff with seasonal updates
Qualifications 
  • Guiding experience in the marine environment (local experience is an asset)
  • Ability to problem-solve and maintain considerable poise and composure in various situations
  • Familiarity with company ethics and willingness to be an ambassador of our company values
  • Strong work ethic & the ability to take initiative
  • Knowledge of local history, marine wildlife, and basic vessel mechanics
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Well organized, personable and reliable
  • Given a large number of foreign customers, fluency in English and the addition of a second or third language preferable
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, including mornings, evenings and weekends
  • SVOP, MED-A2 or A3, ROC-M, Marine Basic First Aid
