We are a carbon neutral adventure tour company located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in the village of Tofino. The majority of our corporate revenue goes back to the environment. What is this position about?

Our adventure tour guides primary goal is to ensure the safety of our each of our guests, and to provide memorable and educational experiences for visitors on the waters of Clayoquot Sound. Our guides are conservation minded educators, familiar with the local shoreline and its hazards. Captains will know how to safely operate a vessel in variable weather and sea conditions. Guides are also expected to have a thorough knowledge of local ecology, indigenous and migratory wildlife common to our region, a grasp of local First Nation’s history, and the ability to share their knowledge passionately with our guests. Guiding is a skilled position both from a vessel handling perspective and the interpretive skills required to deliver quality programs. Guiding is a high stamina job.

General Guide Responsibilities: 

  • Safety of passengers, the vessel, wildlife & the environment: Perform ethical & responsible wildlife viewing practices.
  • Deliver quality interpretive tours adhering to Ocean Outfitters standards, values, and mission.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to keeping current and deepening your knowledge base.
  • Upkeep and minor vessel maintenance.
  • Maintain safety equipment, and follow safety practices set by Ocean Outfitters.
  • Maintain positive relationships with staff.
Qualifications 

Skills, Knowledge, Availability:

  • Guiding experience in the marine environment (local experience is an asset).
  • Ability to problem-solve and maintain considerable poise and composure in various situations.
  • Familiarity with company ethics and willingness to be an ambassador of our company values.
  • Strong work ethic & the ability to take initiative.
  • Knowledge of local history, marine wildlife, and basic vessel mechanics.
  • Background and interest in conservation and ecology.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Exceptional interpretive guiding skills.
  • Well organized, personable and reliable.
  • Given a large number of foreign customers, fluency in English and the addition of a second or third language preferable.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Guiding is a high stamina job. Candidates should be aware that the job requires long hours and considerable   physical, and mental strength.

Recommended Education:

IGA Interpretive Guide Association Training
BSc Environmental Studies, Biology, Geography, or related
