Chemistry Consulting Group has been retained by Tourism Tofino to search for a Travel Media Relations & Business Development Specialist.

Working on behalf of over 200 local businesses, Tourism Tofino is the destination management and marketing organization tasked with generating customers for its members and economic benefits for its community. In 2018, 600,000 visitors came to Tofino and spent $295 million dollars. The Tourism Tofino team works hard to market its remarkable destination and deliver a memorable visitor experience. They work collaboratively and effectively to create results that make a difference within their community.

The purpose of this new and exciting role will be to inspire travel to Tofino through the generation of travel media exposure and the development and implementation of sales & marketing strategies for the Meetings & Incentive Travel, Travel Trade and Education sectors.

Responsibilities:

Travel Media Relations:

• Research and recruit travel media and influencers as determined by Tourism Tofino’s tactical plans;
• Co-ordinate and host media visits and sales events;
• Service media inquiries including image/video requests, interview set-ups, and fact-checking;
• Develop beneficial partnerships with other destination marketing organizations, government agencies and members;
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with travel media;
• Maintain detailed activity and results tracking;
• Maintain current content on all on-line and print travel guides;
• Ensure travel media section of website is current;
• Provide communications support to the Executive Director and staff;

Business Development:

• Develop and implement the sales and marketing plans for the meetings, travel trade and education sectors;
• Create and implement co-operative sales and marketing programs;
• Generate leads and lead room nights through direct sales initiatives;
• Co-ordinate and host buyer familiarization tours;
• Collaborate with members and partners;
• Implement systems for the handling of all sales and service leads and inquiries;
• Maintain comprehensive activity and results tracking;
• Manage departmental budget;
• Ensure travel trade has current destination description and planning information (including wholesalers, receptive operators, agent consortiums, RV rental companies);
• Ensure sales sections of website are current;
• Make presentations to industry and local community as required;
• Represent Tourism Tofino on external committees and at functions;

Qualifications 

Competencies:

• Experience with travel media relations and understanding of meetings sales;
• Interest in and ability to sell;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Adept at inter-personal relationship building and client/customer service;
• Ability to exercise independence of judgment and carry out the responsibilities with minimal direction;
• Superior computer, technical and social media skills;
• Experience with media evaluation and measurement tools;
• Strong initiative and resourcefulness;
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail;
• Goal and results oriented, commitment to innovation and improvement;
• Budget development and management skills;
• Ability to co-ordinate and manage multiple projects simultaneously;

Education and Experience

• Minimum of a university degree in business, communications, marketing or related field
• 3+ years of experience in travel media relations;
• experience as meetings and/or travel trade sales coordinator/specialist.
