The Alberni Aquarium and Stewardship Centre, located at the Harbour Quay in Port Alberni, BC,
is a non-profit organization and community leader in environmental education. The centre connects the
public through engagement, knowledge and awareness, and offers an interactive and informative
experience to people of all ages. Caring for 13 tanks of west coast critters – wolf eels, sea stars, salmon,
rockfish and anemones offer a real life, face-to-face learning experience!

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about the environment, education, and
community. The Aquarium Manager Position will report to the Aquarium Board and will work closely with
the aquarium team. The successful candidate will be responsible for front desk operations, conducting
tours, tank maintenance, fish health, coordinating and attending community outreach, organizing special
events, and helping with fundraising opportunities.

The primary role of the Candidate is to:

  • Provide and maintain a safe and positive work environment.
  • Provide interactive personal tours for visitors.
  • Lead school groups.
  • Be responsible for providing excellent customer service at the front desk area.
  • Assist with special events, marketing, and promotions.
  • Supervise and mentor staff and volunteers.
  • Researching appropriate marine biology information.
  • Ensure the health and well-being of the animals.
  • Ensure that proper tank maintenance happens daily.
  • Ensure that stock is up to date.
Qualifications 
  • Experience in customer service.
  • Demonstrate great attention to detail.
  • Great with kids.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and order.
  • Be self motivated, resourceful, and show initiative.
  • Be comfortable working unsupervised and following precise routines.
  • Have proven written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be able to lift, push, or pull 50 lbs, as well as climb ladders.
  • A basic understanding of the biological and/or environmental sciences.
  • Experience working with marine life and or tank maintenance.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A passion for the environment and what we are doing to champion it.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of an integrated team.
  • Assets include: experience with other aquariums, public programming and interpretation, creativity and resourcefulness, graphic design and marketing experience.

Wage Subsidy:
