WorkBC Port Alberni has proudly provided employment services in the Alberni Valley since 2012. Our team is committed to creating a welcoming, helpful and motivating atmosphere for our clientele. We are looking for a new addition to our team of Employment Counsellors! Could it be you?

As an Employment Counsellor (EC), your task would be to bring quality customer service, guidance and assistance to clients who are seeking employment services. We work as a team to empower clients to be independent in their job search journey, while knowing they have supportive professionals in their corner to teach and guide them. In the past, this job has proven a good fit for applicants with a professional background in the Health Care industry.

The duties of an EC include but are not limited to:

  • Provide supportive communication one-on-one to clients in-person, over the phone and through email.
  • Conduct guided interviews and assessments with clients to determine their employment-related needs.
  • Maintain individualized Action Plans with clients, providing ongoing support to help them achieve their employment goals.
  • Refer clients to interventions (e.g. Wage Subsidy work experience, self-employment, skills enhancement) and community services and resources, as appropriate for their needs and eligibility.
  • Manage electronic client case files, tracking and recording client progress.
  • Strictly follow confidentiality policies around collecting and disclosing client information.

At WorkBC Port Alberni we try to create career opportunities that allow our team to live a balanced life for their well-being, security and stability. The newest member of our team would be provided with the following:

  • Monday to Friday work schedules
  • Benefits package - including drug, vision and dental
  • Allotted number of paid sick days, personal days and vacation days each year
  • Time off for all statutory holidays
  • A yearly allowance for professional development opportunities
  • The chance to work with a great team!
Qualifications

Key Requirements:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in a relevant field (e.g. voc rehab, social work, human services, counselling, health care, education, or human resource management), combined with related experience.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Proven teamwork skills which demonstrate collaboration, flexibility, and respectful relations with others.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office, database systems, email and Internet.
  • Exceptional organization, time management, and customer service skills.
  • Skilled in conflict management and assertive communication – able to deal with challenging client behaviour in a calm, empathetic, firm, and professional manner.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring clients, working with a broad range of cultural and social backgrounds, and an understanding of individuals with complex barriers.
  • Good knowledge of community resources, services, and labour market trends.

Preferred but not essential:

  • Previous work in a related discipline such as human resources, education, or career counselling.
  • Career or employment development certification, including completion of “Career Theories and Ethics” course.
  • Experience working in employment programs funded by the province, including use of the Integrated Case Management system.
