Alberni Drug & Alcohol Prevention Service is looking for a dynamic Youth Outreach Worker, with a varied skill set to complement their service delivery team. As part of the “Youth Action Worker” Project, the outreach worker will deliver service to youth-at-risk in our community. This is a part-time, contract position. The duration of the project is nine months, running from mid-Sept 2014 to May 2015.
Key duties and Responsibilities:
As the Youth Action Worker, you effectively build supportive relationships with at-risk youth who are sometimes difficult to engage. You create a positive profile for youth services and supports, and assist youth to access appropriate community services through referrals. You possess strong crisis intervention skills, and have experience working with youth who are substance affected or who have mental health concerns.
A commitment to trauma informed practice, and sensitivity to the social realities of youth whose life experiences include violence, substance misuse and mental health concerns is imperative in this role. The successful candidate has a strong adherence to ethics, and a keen understanding of the theory, principles and best practices for child and youth care counselling and youth substance misuse. Knowledge of the Youth Justice System and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in child and youth care or related field. A combination of relevant education and experience in crisis intervention, street outreach, youth justice, social development, child and youth care counselling, or health promotion will be considered. First Aid and Basic CPR required. You will also possess skills in effective communication, mentoring, time management and group facilitation. Flexibility with hours of work are essential, with a commitment to work weekends. Use of personal vehicle, a driver’s abstract and a police records review will be required.
