HI TOFINO, Whalers on the Point Guesthouse is a welcoming accommodation in the heart of Tofino BC.
Our hostel is conveniently located in downtown Tofino, B.C. on Vancouver Island and was constructed in 1999 with coed dorms, female only dorms, private rooms and suites. We are a 'travellers' community and we strive to provide our guests with secure, clean and affordable accommodation. While working at HI TOFINO, you are expected to treat the guests and fellow staff members with respect and consideration. Our goal is to welcome people into the hostel, and provide them with an authentic experience of Clayoquot Sound through our Adventure Centre activities while upholding Hostelling International's Quality Standards, Brand and Policies.
Role Summary
The Assistant General Manager is responsible for supporting the General Manager in all aspects of hostel management in accordance with Hosteling International policies, and standards. While directly supervising the front desk staff, he/she communicates on an ongoing basis with the other departments. This position is responsible for understanding, and communicating the hostel's policies and procedures, as well as assisting the GM in ensuring each department works together to provide accommodation and services that meet the customer's needs.
Key responsibilities
· Maintaining a “hands-on” management style through the completion of duty manager and front desk shifts and service assistance in all departments
· Engaging in regular communication with staff, guests and maintenance department
· Filling in for the General Manager during his/her absence or staff shortages
· Leading the effective and efficient daily operations of the front desk by leading and motivating all front desk in aspects of customer service, hostel products and services, and hostel operations
· Performing Front Desk duties such as using WebrezPro Booking System, taking reservations, checking in guests, and handling cash
· Managing Discount Company Relations for our Adventure Centre, OTA's and Group Bookings
· Ordering Supplies and managing inventory for the hostel with the General Manager
· Ensuring excellent customer service by resolving guest complaints in a friendly, effective manner
· Assessing staffing and executing hiring and termination procedures
Attributes
· Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written). French or German language is an asset.
· Ability to understand the needs of guests and staff
· Ability to remain composed during high-pressure situations
· Skilled in time management and organization techniques
· Ability to provide excellent customer service
· Ability to develop and maintain an effective filing system
· Knowledge of risk management in an accommodations setting is an asset
Experience and requirements
· Minimum of 2-3 year experience in hotel/hostel reservations, hotel front desk and/or travel agent supervisory role (including yield management responsibility)
· Working knowledge of travel industry and hotel reservations systems
· Any experience in sales and marketing
· Knowledge of HI-PM’s policies and procedures
· Intermediate computer training – knowledge of MS Office, Word and Excel
· Formal business/management education is an asset
