The Canoe Journey Coordinator is responsible for the day to day programming and planning for the upcoming 2020 Canoe Journey from Hitacu to Snuneymuxw in Nanaimo. The Canoe Journey Coordinator will work with the Department of Culture and Heritage in planning and implementing programs that will allow for the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ canoe team to begin and end the journey strong and healthy; physically, mentally, and spiritually. The Canoe Journey Coordinator reports to the Manager of Culture and Heritage.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Planning and overseeing weekly training sessions (Canoe and Gym based)
• Planning and overseeing weekly cultural protocol training
• Planning and managing the Canoe Journey route and schedule
• Planning and managing the safety crew route and schedule
• Planning and managing the support team including travel and accommodation
Required
• Extensive past experience with Canoe Journeys
• Flexible schedule - Availability to plan and attend weekly training sessions
• Experience working with all ages and walks of life
• Experience with personal and group healing journeys
• Experience with planning personal and group exercise and training programs
• Commitment to the group journey and to group safety
Skills
• Open-minded and able to support all program participants from all walks of life
• Exceptional / strong planning, organizational and coordination skills
• Exceptional / strong and respectful communication skills
• Strong knowledge of Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ culture
