The Alberni Valley Hospice Society (AVHS) is looking for a Grief and Bereavement Counselor to join our progressive and dynamic team. The Grief and Bereavement Counselor provides counselling services to grieving and bereaved clients and oversees the grief and bereavement programs. The Counselor will work closely with the Hospice Services Coordinator and the Ty Watson House Coordinator and reports to the Executive Director.
Alberni Valley Hospice is a non-profit charitable organization. Our mission is to enhance the quality of the end-of-life experience for those that are dying, for their caregivers to receive the assistance they need and for families and friends to be supported in their grief.
Responsibilities include:
Provides grief and bereavement counseling to families of hospice community clients, community referrals and TWH residents and their familiesAssesses and evaluates existing bereavement programs and education
Assists in the development of new education and support programs
Works with and assists the Hospice Services Coordinator and TW House Coordinator to debrief and provide psychosocial support to volunteers and staff re resident and family contacts
Acts as a liaison with other community agencies and services promoting hospice services
Provides psychosocial support, information, and education to meet the needs of residents and families
Maintains records and statistical data of all bereavement clients
Assists the Hospice Services Coordinator when required with hospice volunteer training and education
Provides written reports as required to the Executive Director and for the Annual General Meeting
Attends related meetings
Maintains an active commitment to professional development
Skills and Qualifications:
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, or Family Therapy with demonstrated training andexperience in working with grieving and bereaved clients
Recognized hospice training course to be completed upon
Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with the hospice team and other professionals
Ability to work effectively with individuals and families, on a one-to-one or group basis
Compassionate, caring attitude
Demonstrate initiative, flexibility and self-direction
Excellent record keeping, computer and organizational skills
