Full Time Position: Natural Resources Field Supervisor
Location: Anacla Government Office (Bamfield, B.C.)
Authority Relationship: Reports to the Lands and Marine Coordinator
Salary Range: Dependent on Experience and Education
Position Summary: The Natural Resources Field Supervisor Participates in Lands and Resources department operations in a responsible and sustainable manner in accordance with the principles of ?iisaak (Iisaak), His?uk ma c?awak (Hishuk ma tsawalk), and ?uu?aluk (Uuathluk). Helps to manage effective field work operations in natural resource projects and programs
Key Accountabilities:
- Working in collaboration with the Lands and Resources team to support sustainable harvesting of fisheries, wildlife and plant resources
- Completing field and office work to support good environmental stewardship including fisheries, wildlife and environmental monitoring
- Supervising field team to ensure projects are successful
- Managing field data and compiles reports
- Taking direction from and working closely with Huu-ay-aht Lands & Marine Coordinator
- Implementing operational safety plans
- Completing land, resource and archeological surveys
- Helping to coordinate annual food fish program operations by completing fish offloads, fish transport and food fish distribution/ deliveries
- Assisting with fisheries assessments such as: domestic fish surveys, swim counts, stream walks and juvenile salmon trapping.
- Completing work at Sugsaw Hatchery including brood stock capture, egg enumeration, and related duties.
- Maintaining confidentiality and neutrality at all times.
Job Duties:
- Participates in harvest monitoring activities such as:
- Water and land-based patrols and phone interviews (with HFN teammates, DFO staff and other external parties).
- Helps to establish operational field safety of activities for self and team members.
- Conducts resource harvesting (cedar boughs/bark, seafood etc.) as required with other lands and resources staff.
- Participates in Environmental stewardship projects such as:
- Marine debris cleanup
- Invasive species eradication
- Environmental restoration
- Contamination and spill response
- Maintains job-related equipment in good working condition
- Operates HFN vessels and vehicles safety
- Participates in environmental stewardship, assessment, and enhancement including:
- Fisheries assessment activities such as swim counts, stream walks and juvenile salmon trapping in Huu-ay-aht First Nations watersheds.
- Salmon rebuilding activities and hatchery operations, including capturing salmon broodstock using seining equipment, smolt rearing, habitat restoration.
- Support culturally modified tree / cultural heritage field surveys
- Terrestrial work including large mammal surveys and invasive species assessment and control
- Assists in operation of the Food Fish Program including:
- Delivery of fresh and frozen fish to major cities in collaboration with colleagues
- Logistical coordination
- Citizen engagement via phone, email and in-person
- Data entry & tracking
- Implements operation field safety protocols
- Implements environmental and emergency preparedness operations
- Prepares written and verbal reports as necessary
- Attends technical meetings and training as directed.
- Other duties as required to achieve organizational goals and operational needs.
