With funding from Decoda Literacy Solutions, the Literacy Coordinator supports the Coastal Family Resource Coalition’s implementation of the Dual Language Literacy Plan.

All activities will reflect the unique strengths of the west coast communities and will be grounded in culture, respect, and collaborative practices. The employee will also be responsible for meeting the requirements of the funder, Decoda Literacy Solutions. Communities to be served are Hot Springs, Ahousaht, Opitsaht, Tofino, Ty-histanis, Esowista, Hitacu, Macoah, and Ucluelet.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains a Language Network to identify regional literacy priorities and work collaboratively to support activities in alignment with the Dual Language literacy plan (hereafter referred to as the literacy plan).
  • Delivers the Nuu-chah-nulth Language Grants program administered by the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust.
  • Builds community awareness around Nuu-chah-nulth and English literacy and language development.
  • Advocates for the development of all aspects of literacy (numeracy, physical literacy etc.) in both Nuu-chah-nulth and English, in all West Coast communities.
  • Builds relationships with the participating communities to support communities to deliver and sustain local literacy initiatives.
  • Works with partners in all West Coast communities to move forward the literacy plan initiatives.
  • Promotes the various literacy days and events throughout the year (Raise-a-Reader, Family Literacy Day, and National Indigenous Peoples Day).
  • Attends and participates in relevant community meetings throughout the region.
  • Contributes to funding proposals to support literacy activities and initiatives throughout the region.
  • Provides reporting on activities and finances to Decoda Literacy Solutions and other funders when required.
  • Creates quarterly work plans with the Community Developer to align CFRC network priorities and activities.
  • Provides monthly reports/up-dates at the Coastal Family Resource Coalition meetings and supports meeting facilitation as required.

Working Conditions

  • 7.5 hour workday/7.5 hour work week
  • Ability to work on a flexible schedule, evenings and weekends may be required to attend events and meetings.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license and access to vehicle required to travel to occasional meetings, events, and presentations across the Biosphere region.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • The position will require long hours sitting in front of a computer screen.
  • The position will require travel by small boat and float plane to remote communities.

Direct Reports

  • Reports to the CFRC Community Developer and the CFRC Executive Committee.

 

Qualifications 

Qualifications (subject to modifications dependent on staff compliment and/or operational requirements)

 

Education

Nuu-chah-nulth language study and/or education degree preference.

Professional Certifications

N/A

Experience

Significant experience working in a cross-cultural and rural-remote setting (preferred).

Experience in program and network development.

Knowledge

Knowledge of conservation and sustainable development.

Knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth communities and priorities in the Biosphere Region.

Knowledge of government programs and initiatives in the Biosphere Region (preferred).

Knowledge and understanding of the ongoing impacts of colonization in the region.

Skills / Abilities
