Details

As Wharf Assistant, you will play a hands-on and highly visible role in the day-to-day management of Tofino’s harbour facilities. This is a physically active, customer-facing position best suited for someone who enjoys outdoor work, takes pride in community service, and is comfortable working independently.

The Wharf Assistant is a key part of a small, dedicated team, reporting directly to the harbour manager. While the harbour manager oversees administrative and operational planning, the Wharf Assistant focuses on harbour oversight, maintenance, and user support.

This seasonal role runs through the end of October, with the potential to evolve into a returning seasonal or year-round position for the right candidate.

KEY RESPONSEBILITIES

  • Serve as a welcoming and knowledgeable point of contact for harbour users and the public.
  • Monitor vessel and vehicle activity; conduct daily boat counts and enforce parking policies.
  • Collect fees for public boat ramp access, moorage, and other harbour services.
  • Conduct routine patrols and inspections of all docks and facilities to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Support harbour waste management by organizing disposal, including dump runs and bulk item handling.
  • Assist with light maintenance tasks, including painting, repairs, and seasonal projects.
  • Collaborate with the harbour manager on administrative improvements and space organization.
  • Maintain daily records, communicate issues promptly, and take initiative to resolve challenges.
  • Uphold THA policies and standards with fairness and professionalism.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, stay organized, and make sound decisions without direct supervision.
  • Marine familiarity (tying knots, moving boats, spotting hazards) is an asset, but not required.
  • Comfortable with physical work, including lifting up to 50 lbs and being outdoors in all weather.
  • Positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to learn on the job.
  • Reliable and accountable, with a strong sense of ownership and pride in your work.
  • Competent using MacOS and iOS devices and apps (training provided).
  • Valid BC driver’s license required.
  • Experience in the marine industry, construction, trades, or similar outdoor roles is an asset.
