Cermaq Canada is currently looking to fill a temporary role of Hatchery Technician 3 at our Port Alberni hatchery.
In this role, you’ll get the opportunity to provide support throughout our freshwater lifecycle of our Altantic Salmon. You’ll apply your husbandry skills as you hatch and grow our fish, preparing them for their journey into the ocean. You’ll spend your time both indoors and outside, remaining physically active as you help care for our fish. You’ll apply your analytical skills as you collect data and report on the health of our fish and get the chance to solve a wide array of problems as you work independently throughout the evenings and on weekends.

POSITION DETAILS:
Shift rotations will include a combination of day, afternoon, and/or evening shifts and weekend work

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

  • Providing support to the hatchery through general husbandry operations to ensure a healthy lifecycle of the fish through incubation, feeding practices, water quality monitoring, mortality removals, and smolt transfers
  • Monitoring fish activity and conducting environmental monitoring and sampling activities to ensure proper fish welfare
  • Observing, collecting, and reporting on pertinent hatchery data to ensure that concerns identified and addressed
  • Upholding and supporting adherence to the hatchery’s
Qualifications 
  • You have previous education or work experience in aquaculture, preferably within a salmon hatchery setting
  • You are skilled with MS Excel and MS Word and have experience using a microscope
  • You consider yourself a team player, get along great with others and are always looking to lend a hand
  • You can also work independently and without supervision, you take initiative and apply your critical thinking skills to solve problems
  • You enjoy being outside and are willing to work in all types of weather conditions
  • You are dependable, have a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude
     

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prerequisites to hiring include a physical fitness test, a criminal record check and reference checks
  • This position is not camp-based; you will be responsible for your own travel to and from the hatchery
