We are seeking an Intermediate Accountant to join our Finance Team, whose focus is fulfilling its responsibilities in a respectful, cooperative, cohesive and timely manner.

A key aspect of the Intermediary Accountant’s position will the responsibility for funding agreements from an accounting and reporting perspective, including recording receivables in Adagio, tracking, monitoring, financials, completing draft reports budgets to actual assessment and liaison with departments.

The position completes and/or assists in other Finance areas as: PST/GST filings; reconciliations; recording journal entries; monitoring compliance with policies; audit prep; financial analysis; guiding/assisting staff.

Qualifications

The successful candidate skills and experience will include:

  • Thorough understanding of the accounting cycle and related processes; experience and skills in accounting and bookkeeping; solid experience in accounting software (preferably Adagio).Grade 12 Graduate with related Accounting Courses . Must be proficient using the Adagio Accounting Software 
  • Completion of third year from a recognized accounting education program leading to a professional accounting designation or equivalent experience 
  • Minimum five years of directly related complex accounting work experience, preferably with First Nations, local government, or public practice. 
  • Ability to provide education and guidance to co-workers in accounting procedure

Overview:
The Ucluelet Aquarium seeks efficient, enthusiastic individuals who are capable both of self motivating during individual projects and working with a team. Aquarist/Interpreters monitor and maintain exhibit health and cleanliness, orient visitors through the facility as well as the community, and act as ambassadors for the surrounding marine environment. Through delivery of public talks and programs, Aquarist/Interpreters tell the stories of our complex marine ecosystems and the life histories of the inhabitants that reside within them. The Aquarist/Interpreter should be familiar with the marine life found on the west coast and should be an effective communicator of that knowledge. The Ucluelet Aquarium values teamwork, creativity and knowledge sharing. Applicants should be comfortable multi-tasking, public speaking and collaborating with others on projects.

Applicants must be able to work for the duration of the Aquarium’s busy summer season and must be able to work holidays and weekends. The Ucluelet Aquarium is an education-based public aquarium that aims to foster respect for local marine environments. seaweeds. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
● Ensure animals are well cared for and healthy
● Interact with visitors while sharing knowledge of the aquarium’s collection
● Greet visitors, handle admissions, and retail transactions
● Design educational displays and programs
● Participate in and lead educational events for the public
● Communicate with the public and the media in a professional manner
● Work with the aquarium team to collect and release aquarium specimens
● Assist in the maintenance of the flow-through sea water system
● Provide support to other areas of the Aquarium

POSITION DETAILS: 

Status: Permanent, full-time

Shift: 8 days on, 6 days off; 10 hours per day for a total of 80 hours bi-weekly

Starting Wage: $19.35 per hour  

Benefits: Immediate (during COVID-19). To provide additional support to our employees and their families, employer-paid benefits inclusive of Extended Health & Dental will be accessible upon hiring. After successful completion of your probationary period you will be eligible to participate in our RRSP program.

A DAY ON THE JOB: 

  • Provide support to the sea site through general husbandry operations, ensuring a healthy lifecycle of the fish from smolt intakes, growth, to harvest 
  • Apply appropriate feeding strategies to grow and manage fish welfare, either through hand feeding or auto-feeding techniques 
  • Monitor fish activity and conduct environmental monitoring and sampling activities to ensure proper fish welfare 
  • Maintain a clean and safe site by performing simple maintenance, following bio security, setting up sites, and closing sites 
  • Operating heavy machinery such as forklifts and watercraft 
Qualifications
  • You have previous education or work experience in aquaculture, preferably within a salmon rearing setting 
  • A team player; gets along great with others and are always looking to lend a hand 
  • Ability to work independently, without supervision; you take initiative and apply your critical thinking skills to solve problems 
  • You are physically fit, enjoy being outside, are willing to work in all types of weather conditions and are comfortable being on the water 
  • You are dependable, safety conscious, have a strong work ethic and positive attitude 
  • Maintenance experience would be considered an asset 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Prerequisites include a physical fitness test (where available), a criminal record check and reference checks 
  • Camp-based position, transportation is provided to the sea site from Port McNeil, Campbell River and Tofino 
  • You can meet the transportation to Port McNeil in:  Courtenay or Campbell River. 
  • You can meet the transportation to Tofino in: Campbell River, Courtenay, Coombs, Port Alberni, or Ahousaht
  • Canadian Citizens or individuals who can legally be employed in Canada

Duties:

  • Perform certified dockside monitoring and electronic monitoring field services work in Ucluelet and the surrounding region.
  • Help to schedule and deploy staff for dockside and electronic monitoring work in Ucluelet and the surrounding region.
  • Help, as needed, to view predetermined imagery for trips made by fishing vessels with electronic monitoring (EM) units onboard.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring and training of dockside and electronic monitoring staff.
  • Provide regional administrative assistance to Archipelago’s fishery monitoring programs. Provide technical support by performing data entry and data verification.
  • Regularly meet with the port supervisors and staff to exchange information and to discuss issues affecting port operations.
  • Maintain hard drive inventory in port and communicate with the Victoria office on a regular basis.
  • Serve as a point of contact concerning the activities of the office.
  • Act as back-up port supervisor during vacation and weekend coverages.

  • A demonstrated ability to work under own initiative without direction.
  • Electronic monitoring work requires mechanical aptitude, experience with hand tools and basic understanding of electrical circuits.
  • Ability to work independently, follow procedures, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Must be computer savvy and be comfortable navigating through various applications simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of the fishing industry and ability to identify commercially important marine species an asset.
  • Some post secondary education in a related field and/or sufficient relevant work experience is an asset.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with previous at-sea observer and/or dockside observer work experience.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver Licence (or equivalent to) with a reliable vehicle.

Terms of Employment:

  • The position is salary, with a rate of $34,200/yr based on a 33.75 hr/work week.
  • Position is subject to an overtime averaging agreement, approved by Labour Canada.
  • Must obtain Fisheries Observer Certification through Fisheries and Oceans, Canada*. This required certification training is provided to successful candidates in our training course.
  • The successful candidate will need to provide a criminal record check to be certified as a Fisheries Observer as required by Fisheries and Oceans, Canada.
  • Ability to travel within Canada and the US.

*Fisheries Act and Fisheries (General) Regulations state that a person who owns, operates, manages, or is an employee of an enterprise that catches, cultures, processes or transports fish cannot be certified as a Fisheries Observer.

  • B.C. Class 5 or higher ***Class 4 (Unrestricted) drivers licence preferred or willing to get it
  • Training and experience in working at heights
  • Be at least 19 years of age
  • Knowledge of basic climbing equipment, and knots, belaying, rappelling.

  • Knowledge and Experience shooting with a Digital SLR Camera, Go-Pro or Flying a UAV

Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Charges Approve expense to accounts and departments by analyzing invoice/expense reports; recording entries
  • Report sales taxes by calculating requirements on paid invoices
  • Process purchase orders approve by appropriate department managers
  • Verifies vendor accounts by reconciling monthly statements and related transactions
  • Processes payments for approved employee reimbursements
  • Resolves purchase order, contract, invoice and payment discrepancies

Duties and Responsibilities:

Accounts Receivable

  • Track and process all credit balances, refunds, adjustments, received payments and reimbursements to appropriate accounts in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Post, file and track all received payments as per the Nation’s accounting practices, including assisting in the maintenance of the general ledgers.
  • Prepare and provide requested reports on responsibilities, including updated general ledger details and the housing report.
  • Administer the process for travel claim reimbursements, including the submission and tracking of the reimbursements.
  • Oversee the tenant’s statements of accounts, including preparing invoices, collecting payments, issuing receipts, and updating the account information.
  • Investigate and resolve collection problems.

 

Payroll

  • Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and timely for the Nation’s staff.
  • Acquire and review staff timesheets for accuracy, completeness, and signature.
  • Maintain an accurate database of relevant employee information to process payroll and ensure that resulting payroll changes are processed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Oversee the distribute of paystubs to staff.
  • Administer the Nation’s benefits programs for the staff, including staff enrolment and benefit payments.
  • Maintain knowledge of payroll regulations and standards.
  • Compile and track payroll data including leaves of absences, insurance payments, and payroll deductions.
  • Follow the Nation’s payroll procedures for establishing and terminating employees
  • Prepare government remittances, including WorkSafeBC remittances.
  • Create and distribute T4s.
  • Respond to employee and government agency inquires in regards to payroll.

Qualifications

Education, training and certificates

  • High School Diploma
  • Post secondary diploma in business of administration, finance or accounting

Work experience

  • 4 year experience in an administration setting, working with finances and payroll
  • Data entry experience

Position Summary: Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations Public Works seeks a highly motivated individual with a strong eye for detail to fill the full-time position of Operations and Maintenance Worker, reporting to the Manager of Public Works on all aspects of the position.

Oversees the Nation’s water and wastewater systems to ensure that they are adequately supplying the Nation’s community buildings with a sufficient potable water source and wastewater storage and removal.

Culture Commitment

The Operations and Maintenance Worker oversees the Nation’s waterworks infrastructure to ensure that these systems are maintained and provide the Nation’s members with quality resources. This position upholds the culture of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations by providing the Nation’s members with a community that recognizes its members’ worth and quality of life.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Potable Water & Waste Water Systems

  • Oversee the maintenance of the waterworks infrastructure.
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly and semi-annual preventative maintenance and performance checks on the potable water and wastewater systems in accordance with the established maintenance scheduled.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues with the potable water and wastewater systems and, if necessary, request the assistance of a third-party contractor.
  • Respond to any alarm notifications in a timely manner.
  • Identify, anticipate, and request needed supplies or equipment to ensure an uninterrupted and continuous operation of the potable water and wastewater systems.
  • Follow and adhere to the established operations and maintenance manual.
  • Maintain a record of all maintenance work performed.
  • Ensure that work is performed in a safe manner, in compliance with the Nation’s safety standards and government regulations.

Housing Maintenance

  • Provide additional support to the Geo Thermal Operator and housing/other maintenance staff.

Qualifications

  • Drivers Licence and own phone. Technician

Work experience

  • 2 years experience in a maintenance role

    • Buildings and infrastructure practices and regulations, public works and utilities practices and principles, waterworks, basic math and chemistry
  • Skills and abilities:
    • Maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment, communication skills, able to work independently and without supervision, able to read technical drawings and manuals, time management
  • Attributes:
    • Problem solver, customer-oriented, critical thinking, attention to detail

Working Environment:

Work Conditions

  • Works primarily onsite at the remote water or wastewater facility.
  • May be required to work outdoors and as such may be exposed to inclement weather.
  • May be exposed to hazards associated with working with electrical equipment.
  • May be required to respond to emergency situations, regardless of time of day.

Physical requirements

  • Good health, allowing one to perform physical tasks throughout the day, including bending, lifting, carrying, walking.
  • Must be able to stand on feet for prolonged periods of time.
  • May be required to lift or carry heavy items over 20lbs.
  • Must be able to be mobile and visit locations that can only be accessed by stairs or rough, uneven ground.

Travel requirements

  • Required to travel by car.
  • May be required to travel by boat.

This position will primarily work to connect chefs to quality food, conduct sales calls, take orders, and complete purchase orders. This position will also provide warehouse support in receiving and packing orders, delivering to restaurants, and some administrative assistance.

• Strong attention to detail, and an innate tact and genuineness when working with people
