Westcoast Community Resources Society is a charitable organization which shares the community’s vision that every member’s well-being is ensured. We have a number of ministry funded programs providing free and confidential services to community members on the west coast. The Community Support Worker is responsible for the creation of integrated leisure opportunities designed to support each individual and to assist them in developing to the fullest extent of their abilities. The Worker will schedule activities that increase community participation and will facilitate the development of strong personal networks, peer support and mentorship, community awareness and safety skills for individuals. They will build and maintain a warm and friendly working relationship based on cooperation with participants, co-workers, family/caregivers and others in the community. 

This is a client-led contract to provide community inclusion support to Community Living BC (CLBC) client. Hours are not guaranteed as they are dependent on number of client contracts and client needs, but is on average 12 hours a week. Work involves direct client support to develop life skills and social integration, or as directed by CLBC assessment. Work may occur in the client’s home or in the community. Monthly reporting and client documentation is required. Supervision and case management is provided by WCRS. This position requires union membership. 

Qualifications

1.Community Service Worker Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience 

2.Ability to work independently 

3.Excellent liaison skills 

4.Full awareness of and ability to work within set clear boundaries 

5.Experience with life skills and integration work 

6.Experience working with adults with developmental needs 

7.Use of a reliable vehicle for work, and a full class 5 BC Drivers License with appropriate insurance 

8.Successful criminal record check 

9.Level 1 first aid with CPR 

10.Food safe certification preferred 

11.Non-Violent crisis intervention training preferred

About Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society:

Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society (SIMRS) is a non-profit organization based in Tofino, British Columbia. We are dedicated to conducting long-term marine research and monitoring, providing marine mammal response, and educating the public about marine ecosystems on the west coast of Vancouver Island. SIMRS has been monitoring marine species in Clayoquot Sound since 1991, primarily focusing on collecting sightings reports and photo-identification of Bigg’s Killer whales in the area. We also monitor for Sea Star Wasting Syndrome by conducting sea star surveys at various field sites during the summer months. SIMRS, as part of the BC Marine Mammal Response Network, helps facilitate rescue and response to marine mammal incidents in the region. Lastly, we aim to educate the public on important marine issues through various education and outreach events. Our Build-A-Whale program is an interactive exhibit that travels around British Columbia to markets, schools, festivals and more, educating participants on the role of killer whales and the threats that face them.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Program Coordinator will assist in the development and delivery of a variety of marine species-related programming. This position will fulfill administrative duties in developing, organizing, and planning education and outreach events, including creating and distributing communication documents. The Program Coordinator is primarily responsible for delivering an engaging and flexible Build-A-Whale program to a wide variety of audiences, and must be comfortable speaking in public and working with children and youth. This role requires travel around British Columbia, where the candidate may be away from home for a number of days or weeks.

The successful candidate will also assist in our research and monitoring projects by conducting field work, entering/analyzing data, coordinating volunteers, report writing, and collaborating with local businesses and organizations. Applicants should be familiar with marine life of British Columbia (marine mammals and intertidal ecology) and have a deeper understanding and current knowledge of issues affecting ocean ecosystems and threats to marine mammals.

Term of Employment: Jan 15th – March 31st 2020, with possibility of extension until September (Flexible start date) 

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline (Biology, Environmental Science, Education)
  • Experience working with children and youth
  • Comfortable with public speaking to a wide range of audiences
  • Outstanding written, oral communication, and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with marine ecosystems & marine species identification
  • Experience in marine monitoring, data collection and sampling
  • Creativity in developing communication documents (articles, newsletters, social media, website)
  • Experience in writing successful grant applications and grant reports
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout Vancouver Island and B.C.
  • Ability to work both individually with limited supervision, as well as with a team
  • Organized, efficient, and able to multi-task on multiple projects
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, and familiarity with Adobe products an asset

 

Desired Skills

  • Experience with database management, spatial analysis (GIS), and statistical programs (R Studio)
  • Engaging and outgoing personality to coordinate and lead citizen science and education programs
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and anticipate needs
  • Marine Certificates including: MEDA3, Marine Radio, Marine & Operational First Aid
  • Pleasure craft operating certificate and boating experience
  • Experience kayaking & snorkeling
  • Experience in community and stakeholder engagement

 

Requirements:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Aged 15-30
  • Have training in biology or related field
  • Familiarity with Tofino community and whale watching industry
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Be physically able to safely lift 50 pounds and to kayak, snorkel, and hike
  • Available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays when necessary

  • Coaching and mentoring the housekeeping team including performance reviews 
  • Monitor labour in accordance with occupancy levels 
  • Establish and/or implement operating procedures and standards 
  • Monitor and motivate housekeeping team to ensure high levels of productivity 
  • Assist with interviewing, hiring and training housekeeping employees in the procedures and techniques 
  • Maintains inventory of amenities, chemicals and other supplies to ensure items are in stock and reorder in timely manner 
  • Facilitate positive and effective communication between Housekeeping, Maintenance and other departments 
  • Assign rotation cleaning duties (deep cleaning, steam clean carpets etc.) as required 
  • Assist Housekeeping Manager as required 

 

Qualifications
  • A secondary school diploma is preferred 
  • Graduate of Hotel Management or Hospitality program a definite asset 
  • Minimum one year of housekeeping experience in a luxury resort property 
  • Excellent communication skills required
  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving abilities 
  • Computer literacy is imperative including Microsoft Office and Opera 
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS) certification required

We’re specifically looking to work with a personal trainer who will provide fitness classes to Tuff Fit members & Tofino Resort + Marina’s guests. Think OrangeTheory. Not Crossfit. Seven days a week. Free of charge.  

In return, Tofino Resort + Marina will provide exclusive access and use of Tuff Fit for you and your clients. No fees to the personal trainer for use of the gym like traditional models. Human Resources:

  • Provide guidance and assistance to department managers in the resolution of administrative issues;

Managerial Responsibilities

  • Plan, co-ordinate, and oversee the delivery of the activities of the program or service to meet the department’s objectives.
  • Manage the financial performance of the department by preparing and operating within approved budgets and reporting discrepancies.
  • Identify and manage staffing needs within approved budgets and participate in the recruitment and selection of staff.
  •  Provide leadership, motivation, and direction to the department’s employees from hiring to termination, including the areas of training, development, performance, conflict resolution, and task allocation.

Qualifications

Education, training and certificates:

  • University degree or certification in a business related, with a human resource or administration component

Work experience:

  • 2 years experience in a Human Resources role
  • 2 years experience in a Supervisory role
  • Experience with First Nation funding and reporting

Knowledge:

  • Human Resource management practices, government and corporate labour legislation, human resource management software, information management systems, MS Office

The purpose of this new and exciting role will be to inspire travel to Tofino through the generation of travel media exposure and the development and implementation of sales & marketing strategies for the Meetings & Incentive Travel, Travel Trade and Education sectors.

Responsibilities:

Travel Media Relations:

• Research and recruit travel media and influencers as determined by Tourism Tofino’s tactical plans;
• Co-ordinate and host media visits and sales events;
• Service media inquiries including image/video requests, interview set-ups, and fact-checking;
• Develop beneficial partnerships with other destination marketing organizations, government agencies and members;
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with travel media;
• Maintain detailed activity and results tracking;
• Maintain current content on all on-line and print travel guides;
• Ensure travel media section of website is current;
• Provide communications support to the Executive Director and staff;

Business Development:

• Develop and implement the sales and marketing plans for the meetings, travel trade and education sectors;
• Create and implement co-operative sales and marketing programs;
• Generate leads and lead room nights through direct sales initiatives;
• Co-ordinate and host buyer familiarization tours;
• Collaborate with members and partners;
• Implement systems for the handling of all sales and service leads and inquiries;
• Maintain comprehensive activity and results tracking;
• Manage departmental budget;
• Ensure travel trade has current destination description and planning information (including wholesalers, receptive operators, agent consortiums, RV rental companies);
• Ensure sales sections of website are current;
• Make presentations to industry and local community as required;
• Represent Tourism Tofino on external committees and at functions;

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the brewing of kombucha in accordance with Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 
  • Measure and document ingredients, sources, lot numbers, Ph readings, etc

  • Clean and sanitize kegs, fermentation vessels, and brite tanks
