Program Coordinator - Job Posting

About us:

Our mission: With a spirit of celebration, we develop and deliver education and public programs that increase food growing and food security for people of all ages in Tofino and surrounding communities.

Our vision: Thriving and resilient coastal communities with access to an abundance of healthy local food and an awareness of what can be grown and harvested within our region.

The Tofino Community Food Initiative is a not for profit community group that formed in 2009 when a bunch of dedicated individuals decided to lay down their shovels and set about dispelling the myth that it is near impossible to grow food on the west coast of Vancouver Island. And while this area does have its quirks around growing food, it is also abundant and fruitful. With the right knowledge and tools you can make anything happen! Since our humble beginnings, we have grown from a volunteer-run passion project to a key community partner in promoting food literacy and food access for our coastal region. We serve all west coast community members with an emphasis on programming for children, youth and families.

About the role:

The Program Coordinator holds a key role within the organization and is responsible for the delivery of our Grow Local Workshops, Community Events, and Fruit Gleaning program. The successful delivery of these programs is key to furthering our mission and commitments to our partners and funders.

You are a natural communicator and a people person. You have a passion and interest for local food and growing and love to share this with others. You are detail oriented and organized, but can zoom out and see the big picture to focus on what matters most. You are aware of your strengths and know when to ask for help when needed. You care deeply about working within a culture that values openness, inclusiveness, and collaboration.

Start date: Feb 15th, flexible.

Commitment: Part-time, contract from Feb 15th-December 15th. Hours will vary, increasing between May-October. Average of 40hrs/month over the course of the contract period. Possibility of extension or more hours, funding dependent.

Wage: $21/hr

What you’ll be doing:

Grow Local Workshops and Community Events:

- Coordinating all aspects of our 3 annual events with the support of Board Members, staff, and volunteers: Seedy Saturday Swap & Sale (March), Edible Garden Tours (July & August), and Harvest Celebration (Fall).

- Hosting community volunteer days at the Wickaninnish School Garden, approx. once per week.

- Researching workshop topics, securing instructors and creating a workshop calendar for
3 free, seasonal workshops. Coordinating all aspects of delivering the workshops.

- Collaborating with the Board of Directors to develop a pilot “Learning to Garden” workshop series for beginners.

Fruit Gleaning Program:

- Outreach to fruit tree stewards, providing educational resources, and ensuring clear expectations and mutual benefit.

- Coordinating gleaning schedules with fruit tree stewards and volunteers, overseeing all picks.

- Hosting neighbourhood tabling events in collaboration with WildSafeBC to share info about bears, chickens, and fruit trees.

- Securing an instructor and hosting a workshop on fruit tree pruning and care.

- Coordinating with community partners for distribution of gleaned fruit.

Other:

- Developing content (written and images) to promote the above programs, events, and activities on social media.

- Ensuring that funding requirements are met through implementation of the evaluation plan and data collection.

- Furthering our volunteer program through the development of outreach materials, training manuals, & volunteer  appreciation.

Qualifications

Skills we’re looking for:

- Experience with event coordination, community engagement, and/or volunteer coordination.

- Gardening or farming experience is preferred (Organic Master Gardener or equivalent is
   an asset).

- Experience working with people of varied cultures, backgrounds and experiences,
  including youth.

- It is essential that you are self-motivated, able to work independently, take initiative, and
  problem solve.

How To Apply

We encourage people of colour, members of the LGBTQQIP2SAA community, people of all genders and abilities, and members of other underrepresented communities to apply.

Please submit a CV & cover letter to helene@tofinocommunityfoodinitiative.com. Interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis until the position is filled. For more information about our organization & mission, please see our website: www.tofinocommunityfoodinitiative.com
