The City of Port Alberni is currently accepting applications for the temporary position of Chargehand – Trades. This position plays a critical role in the scheduling, coordinating and directing of all work undertaken in the mechanical shop and supports the Solid Waste Collection operations.

Examples of duties include:

  • Directing the work of mechanical staff and participating directly in the maintenance, repair and servicing of all City vehicles and equipment, including highly skilled mechanical and welding repair work, and vehicle computer diagnostics
  • Planning and scheduling preventative maintenance work and safety inspections
  • Ensuring all safety regulations and precautions are adhered to
  • Inspecting quality of work performed and implementing new/or improved work methods
  • Preparing records and reports as required
  • Requisitioning materials and equipment
  • Relieving the Fleet and Solid Waste Superintendent when required
Qualifications 
  • Completion of Grade 12 (or equivalent)
  • 10 years combined experience and training in mechanical work
  • Completion of a BC Department of Labour or Inter-Provincial Heavy-Duty Mechanic trades qualification
  • Demonstrated previous supervisory experience
  • Possession of a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with air endorsement
  • LPG Certificate
  • Provincial Vehicle Inspection Certificate
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to schedule, co-ordinate and direct applicable operations

Applicants will be required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all aspects of mechanical and welding repair work as well as complete a pre-employment fitness test.
