Secret Beach Campground & Marina, located on beautiful Toquaht Bay on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, is looking for Campground Hosts to join our team for the summer of 2021. This is an ideal opportunity for a responsible, physically active couple with strong work ethics who want to experience living, working, and playing in an outdoor paradise; however, we will consider 2 single applicants as well.

The successful candidates will be provided with a campsite, and utility services as required, but must have their own self-contained camping unit and reside on-site for the operating season. A marina slip may be provided upon request.
These positions are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the campground, including guest services, assisting staff, and site & facility maintenance. The position is broken down into two categories: Host 1 and Host 2.

Host 1 should be an excellent multi-tasker who is comfortable working in a busy environment and maintaining a clean, friendly, and welcoming demeanor when interacting with guests and team members. Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • guest registration and reservations using a web-based occupancy system (Let’s Camp)
  • responding to in-person and phone inquiries about the campground and recreational activities in the area
  • cash and credit card transactions
  • end-of-day reconciliations
  • other duties as directed

Host 2 should be physically fit and enjoy spending most of the time outdoors, walking, overhead lifting, carrying weights up to 50 lbs, reaching high/low, pulling/pushing, and climbing ladders, regardless of the weather, all while maintaining a clean, friendly, and welcoming demeanor when interacting with guests and team members. Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • cutting grass, trimming branches, raking, sweeping
  • repairing broken items, painting
  • relocating picnic tables and fire pits
  • lifting & carrying supplies
  • collecting & sorting recyclables
  • carrying bundles of firewood
  • other duties as directed

Shared duties will include but not be limited to:

  • cleaning/disinfecting toilets, showers, sinks, and mirrors, washing floors
  • picking up trash and recyclables
  • raking vacated sites and emptying fire pits
  • directing incoming campers to assigned sites
  • spontaneous night patrols after the PM quiet hour to ensure guests are being respectful to their neighbours
  • other duties as directed

A shared responsibility of all campground staff is being vigilant to ensure guests are not damaging property or the natural environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Anticipate and meet guest needs and expectations
  • Provide quality guest services such as assisting campers when needed, explaining rules and regulations, offering information/recommendations on the surround area activities/attractions
  • Ensure the common campground areas are maintained, such as litter & recycling pick up, lawn & landscape care, and cleaning/stocking restrooms
  • Clean campsites/firepits between guests
  • Be observant for activities within the campground requiring immediate attention
  • Collect/manage cash & credit transactions/receipts
  • Book sites by phone and email
  • Report any serious maintenance items which need immediate attention to the manager as soon as possible
  • Provide campground security & vandalism control including securing the entrance gate, spontaneous night patrols when campground is busy, maintain written reports of complaints and criticism, and report situations that could affect the health and safety of visitors to the manager
  • Compliance checks (drive by campsites to make sure campers have paid and are complying with rules and regulations)
  • Loading and Selling Firewood/Ice
Qualifications 
  • Able to work independently and resourcefully in a remote location
  • Able to follow direction and work jointly with co-workers and manager as needed
  • Strong public relations and guest service experience, including the ability to be assertive while maintaining a friendly manner
  • Good at problem solving, decision making and taking responsibility
  • Experience handling cash/credit transactions, and preparing end of day reconciliations
  • Ability to keep organized and detailed records regarding park usage, maintenance requirements, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Prior experience working in an outdoor environment and in a variety of weather conditions
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a high-volume environment
  • General knowledge of handy-worker skills required
  • Self motivated and energetic
  • Willing to work mornings, evenings and weekends as needed
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs
  • Must be able to walk up to 5km per day
  • Must be able to be continuously bending, lifting, carrying of materials & supplies
  • Able to be on feet for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and clean drivers abstract
  • Current First Aid Certification an asset
  • Camping experience preferred
