The PAMHS Board is seeking individuals who are passionate about maritime history and the Alberni Valley to fill the position of Exhibit Guide / Program Assistant at the Maritime Discovery Centre

which consists of two small maritime museums, the Gallery and the Lighthouse, situated on the pier at Harbour Quay Marina at 2900 Harbour Road in Port Alberni. The Exhibit Guide / Youth Programmer job description is available on the Port Alberni Maritime Heritage Society Facebook page.

Job Description:

  • Welcoming and informing visitors of the Society’s exhibits
  • Maintaining records of visitors and tourist attendance
  • Researching specific topics as requested by the Coordinator
  • Planning and delivering weekly children’s programs
  • Delivering special events programs (ex. Pirate Day)
  • Handling cash
  • Completing at end of day the daily cash sheet and petty cash log
  • Completing at end of day other necessary accounting logs
  • General cleaning and maintaining the building in a safe manner
  • Taking pictures of children participating in programs
  • Posting information on the organization’s social media accounts
  • Organizing and delivering a fund raiser
  • Selecting, researching and writing a research paper on a maritime related topic which becomes part of the Society
Qualifications 
  • A passion for maritime history and knowledge of the Alberni Valley and West Coast
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, detail-oriented and energetic
  • Ability to interact effectively with all age levels and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to envision and implement programs independently and with team members
  • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge regarding web browsers and social media
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, carry and move objects up to 20 kg
