The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council/Teechuktl (Mental Health Program) is seeking a term (to March 31, 2019) full-time, Quu'asa Youth Worker. Based out of NTC's Quu'asa office in Port Alberni, the Youth Worker is responsible to identify needs and provide support and guidance to Nuu-chah-nulth youth who are or may be at risk of becoming involved in high risk behaviour. This position will best suit someone who can apply First Nations and Western methods that support youth in developing healthy coping skills, strengths and creating hope. 

Position Responsibilties Include:

  • To work collaboratively with Youth and cross-sector service providers/partners (i.e., Schools, mental health service providers, employment programs, social service agencies) in developing individualized and effective strength-based and culturally competent support plans
  • To provide assistance with daily living activities, supportive counselling around mental health and substance abuse and assist with building coping and life skills
  • To develop and facilitate group discussions, group counselling and interactive learning/capacity building activities
  • To be familiar with other healing resources and introducing (referring) Youth to these resources
  • To empower youth to negotiate their way through Government programs and systems
  • To liase with other staff and resources to respond to criss and mobilize community strength in response
  • To maintain reports, forms and all required documents on a timely basis
  • Ability to fulfill physical requests of working outdoors and working evenings and weekends 
Qualifications 
  • BA/BSW/BCYC Degree required or related degree, plus 3-5 years of professional experience (ideally working with Nuu-chah-nulth, homeless and at risk youth)
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed practice, complex and intergenerational trauma
  • Knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth culture and traditions
  • Experience working in a First Nations environment or being a First Nations person will be considered an asset
  • CPR/First Aid certified
  • Prepared to work evenings and weekends, and irregular hours when necessary
  • Possess a valid BC Driver's License and have daily access to a reliable vehicle 
  • Provide an acceptable criminal background check
