Position Summary:  The Fisheries Technician will perform fisheries activities in a responsible and sustainable manner in accordance to the principles of ʔiisaak (Iisaak), Hišuk ma c̓awak (Hishuk ma tsawalk), and ʔuuʔałuk (Uuathluk), and will work to increase community participation in fisheries related activities.

 

Job Duties:

  • Assist in operation of Food Fish Program including:
    • Delivery of fresh and frozen fish to major cities
    • Logistical coordination
    • Citizen engagement via phone, email and in-person
    • Data entry & tracking
  • Participates in harvest monitoring activities such as:
    • Water and land patrols and phone interviews (with HFN teammates, DFO staff and other external parties).
    • Domestic catch and harvest reporting using the Maa-nulth Electronic Reporting Program (data entry and retrieval).
  • Assisting the Huu-ay-aht Lands & Marine Coordinator in all aspects of domestic fisheries management and fish and fish habitat restoration and enhancement 
  • Contributes to safety of all field and other activities for self and team members.
  • Assists the team to ensure maintenance of natural resources field equipment is in good working condition
  • Assists with fisheries assessments such as: domestic fish surveys, swim counts, stream walks and juvenile salmon trapping
  • Assists with salmon habitat restoration and salmon rebuilding activities in Huu-ay-aht territories
  • Attends natural resources-related training as directed by Lands & Marine Coordinator
  • Completes work at Sugsaw Hatchery including brood stock catch, egg enumeration, and related duties
  • Completes collaborative field work with Natural Resource Department
  • Other duties as required by the Lands & Marine Coordinator
Qualifications 
Operational Requirements:
• Valid class 5 driver’s license.
• Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
• Some travel, including overnight and or weekends.  
• Willingness and ability to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.
• Successful background checks, including employment verification and reference checks.
 
Education and Experience Requirements:
• Demonstrated ability and experience in upholding the HFN Organizational Values:  Professionalism, Respect, Health, Effective Communication, Trust, Support
• Experience in fisheries and some wildlife field work
• Strong customer service orientation
• Must be reliable, diligent, and accountable for time and actions on the job
• Genuine care for Huu-ay-aht’s lands, resources and citizens
• Promoting a performance-focused environment in alignment with the HFN’s values, culture and strategic goals
• Maintaining confidentiality and neutrality at all times
Preferred Qualifications - preference may be given to applicants who have or are willing to obtain:
• First Aid Level 1 with CPR endorsement
• Experience with computer technology Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Swiftwater Rescue Certification, Small Vessel Operator Proficiency, Radio Operator, Marine Emergency Duties and Marine Basic First Aid Certificates
