Reporting to the Director or as required the dean of the Faculty of Trades and Technology, the Trades and Technical Program Support Technician supports all aspects of the tool crib for the designated campus/centre.  Tasks include coordinating tools and training aids, inventory control of program supplies and materials, while ensuring all equipment is in good repair and ready for use at all times. The position provides supports to instructor/s and students and is responsible for the safe use, maintenance and storage of all equipment, while ensuring adherence to all regulatory safety procedures and practice in the shop and at the training site. The position provides guidance with technical procedures and may assist in the supervision of students during lab/shop classes, as required. The Trades and Technical Program Support Technician is accountable for the efficient operation of trades shop/s and compounds, the equipment/tool room and maintenance of program supply rooms.  This includes effective planning and organizing of all necessary tools, materials and equipment for use in the  shop and at training site, ensuring that all supplies and materials are in stock and that equipment is safe, in good repair, ready for use as required to support faculty, students and programming.. The Trades and Technical Program Support Technician is aware of the Mission and Values of North Island College, implements and practices the values in everything they do.

Qualifications 

Required Education & Experience:

1. Trade Qualification in a similar trade area determined by programs served at the campus; this may include Electrical, Welding, Millwright or Mechanical trades,
2. 2.5 years apprenticeship on the job training plus a minimum of 3 years post TQ experience required.  Experience working in an educational setting and familiar with the delivery of educational programming is preferred.
3. OFA Level 1 Certificate required - specific to Tebo/Vigar Vocational Centers.
4. Valid WHMIS and Forklift Operator Certificate

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Maintains and repairs program machinery, equipment and tools to ensure it is in safe working order and tested as required, ready for program instruction.
2. Responsible for the procurement of necessary tools, equipment and supplies required by the instructor/program.
3. Supports instructor/s in the shop and training compound, to ensure that students are in compliance with safety procedures and safe shop practices whilst working on machinery and equipment.
4. Provides guidance to students as required on the safe use of tools from the point of issuance from the toolcrib, to use in the shop and/or training compound, and upon return to the toolcrib.
5. Monitors and maintains an inventory control system of all equipment, tools, materials and supplies, and processes purchase requisitions, shipping and receiving.
6. Ensures a safe working and learning environment by adhering to WHMIS, WCB regulations and compliance with College Health and Safety policies and procedures.
7. Ensures safety equipment and materials are maintained, supporting a safe, clean, and hazards free learning environment.
8. Advises instructors immediately of any concerns with respect to student actions or practices, which may result in unnecessary damage to equipment or unsafe working practices.
9. Maintains a tool sign out agreement and deposit system, while working with the Student Services Department to ensure student deposits are paid and returned as required.
10. Establishes and maintains collaborative and positive workplace relations with instructors, students, staff, and administrators, to support and promote the program and college as a positive learning environment.
11. Responds professionally and positively to student requests for guidance in the safe use of equipment, and identify potential hazards in the shop environment, to ensure students are aware of their responsibilities in the safe use of equipment.
12. Ensures the toolcrib shop floor and storage areas are maintained and are in good order.
13. Responsible to organize, conduct and document monthly toolbox safety meetings with each trade or group of trade instructors. Alert the OHS committee and the director of any issues that are not immediately remedied.
14. Responsible for the repair and maintain training aids. As directed by the director the Technician will be responsible for building training aids limited to their trade or technical area of expertise.
15. Responsible for the maintenance and any necessary enhancements of the tool tag program to track tools, tool boxes and equipment lent out to College students or Trades and Technical Instructors.
16. Monitors coverall/smock supplies for programs.
17. Working under the direction of instructors, distributes exams to students and ensures they are written in a secure environment, within the designated examination area and in accordance to college policy.
18. Supports instructors as needed in all shop and compound areas of the campus location.
19. Operates and performs daily safety checks of the forklift/s and ensures maintenance of forklift/s as required.
20. Supports director/instructors with coordination of program site/yard maintenance, as required.
21. As directed by instructors or director, initiates waste material pick-up and recycling.
22. Provides clerical, administrative and budgeting monitoring support as required.
23. Other duties in support of the program, students, instructor, campus location and Faculty of Trades and Technical programs as assigned.
