Beginning April 1, 2019, Island Work Transitions, Inc. (IWT) will provide WorkBC Employment Services to communities in the Alberni-Clayoquot region, as a subcontractor to Central Vancouver Island Job Opportunities Building Society (CVIJOBS).

IWT is looking to hire two (2) Employment Counsellors to provide case management services for our main WorkBC office in Port Alberni. The successful candidates would start work by March 1, 2019 and will be involved in transitioning to the new program as well as service delivery after April 1.

Under the general direction of the IWT management team, Employment Counsellors:

  • Conduct guided interviews with clients to determine needs relating to employment.
  • Administer and interpret additional assessments where required to further explore clients’ employment needs.
  • Formulate, monitor and update individualized Action Plans with clients, providing them with ongoing support to achieve employment-related goals and objectives.
  • Refer clients to needed interventions (e.g. wage subsidy work experience, self-employment, skills enhancement programs) and other community services and resources, as appropriate for the client’s needs and eligibility.
  • Manage electronic client case files by documenting processes, tracking and recording client progress.
  • Facilitate job search and employment-themed workshops as required.
  • Adhere to strict policies around confidentiality relating to collection and disclosure of client information.

Key Requirements:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in a relevant field (e.g. voc rehab, social work, human services, counselling, education or human resource management), combined with related experience.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively (in writing and orally).
  • Proven teamwork skills which demonstrate collaboration, flexibility, and respectful relations with others.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office, database systems, email and Internet.
  • Exceptional organization, time management, and customer service skills.
  • Skilled in conflict management and assertive communication – able to deal with challenging client behaviour in a calm, empathetic, firm, and professional manner.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring clients, working with a broad range of cultural and social backgrounds, and an understanding of individuals with complex barriers.
  • Good knowledge of community resources, services, and labour market trends.

Preferred:

  • Previous work in a related discipline such as human resources, education, or career counselling.
  • Career or employment development certification, including completion of “Career Theories and Ethics” course.
  • Experience working in employment programs funded by the province, including use of the Integrated Case Management system.
