Haahuupayak School is an Independent School located on Tseshaht First Nation Territory in the beautiful Alberni Valley. Tseshaht First Nation is one of 14 tribes in the Nuuchahnulth Territories. The school community is nestled adjacent to the city of Port Alberni, which has a population of approximately 18,000.

The school has an average student enrolment of 150 (approximately 20 students per class) and delivers the current BC Curriculum to its Kindergarten to Grade 7 students. Students and teachers are supported by an Inclusion Support Teacher, Learning Assistant Teacher, Child and Youth Care workers and a vibrant cultural program.

POSITION TITLE: School Accountant

REPORTING TO: Principal of haahuupayak School

Part-Time Position

Haahuupayak School is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented School Accountant to support the financial operations of our school. This is a key role within our organization, contributing to the effective management of school finances.

Reporting directly to the Principal, the School Accountant plays an essential role in ensuring financial integrity, accountability, and efficiency across all school operations.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Control

  • Ensure all financial and budgetary procedures, policies, and regulations approved by the Board are consistently implemented
  • Manage accounts receivable and accounts payable in a timely and organized manner
  • Maintain and oversee the school’s Code of Accounts
  • Exercise expenditure approval authority as directed

Payroll & Benefits

  • Prepare and administer payroll accurately and on schedule
  • Manage and interpret the school’s employee benefits plan

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • In compliance with Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations(ASNPO)
  • Prepare regular financial statements, variance reports, and program budget reports
  • Manage bank accounts and complete regular reconciliations
  • Support and coordinate the annual audit process, including working with external auditors
  • Ensure all financial records are maintained securely and confidentially

Budgeting & External Reporting

  • Assist the Principal in preparing budgets and funding submissions to external agencies and government departments
  • Support the preparation of required financial reports for external organizations

Advisory & Liaison

  • Provide guidance to the Principal and Board on financial practices, procedures, and compliance
  • Maintain effective communication with funding agencies, financial institutions, and government departments
  • Support regular communication with the Board regarding financial matters

Additional Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the smooth overall operation of the school by taking on additional related duties as needed

Qualifications & Skills

  • Diploma in Accounting (minimum 2-year program)
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in accounting, finance, or a related role
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting
  • Experience with payroll administration
  • High level of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Experience working in a school or non-profit environment is an asset
