Are you the kind of person who can meet someone, make them feel comfortable in about 30 seconds, and somehow find the pair of glasses that makes them say:

“Oh wow. THESE are the ones.”

Do you enjoy people, fashion, problem-solving and sales?

Are you naturally curious, quick to learn, and usually the person who figures things out instead of waiting for somebody else to tell you every next step?

And when things get busy, can you stay positive, jump in where you're needed and work with a team without bringing a side order of drama?

If you just thought, “Yep, that's pretty much me,” keep reading.

Valley Vision Optometry is looking for a high-performing Eyewear Consultant to join our team.

This isn't simply a retail job.

You'll help patients choose eyewear they genuinely love, understand the lens technology that can make their lives easier, solve problems when something isn't quite right, and complete the experience that began in the examination room.

We're looking for somebody who genuinely likes connecting with people and is comfortable selling.

You don't need to know everything about optics on Day 1.

You do need to be resourceful, coachable, accountable, curious and genuinely interested in becoming excellent at what you do.

For the right person, there will also be opportunities to cross-train and work with our Everlook Myopia Management service.

ABOUT US

Valley Vision Optometry is Port Alberni's only independent optometry practice, serving the community since 1960.

We care a lot about four things:

Being Accountable — We do what we say we're going to do.

Creating Long-lasting Relationships — We take the time to genuinely connect with people.

Pursuing Mastery in Optometry — We keep learning and expect to get better at what we do.

Obsessing Over Our Patients and Letting Them Win — When there's a problem, we work to make it right.

If you're looking for a workplace where you can coast, hide in the background and wait to be told what to do, this probably isn't your place.

If you want to learn, contribute, sell, grow and become exceptionally good at what you do, we should talk.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Helping patients choose frames that look great, fit properly and suit their lifestyle
  • Asking great questions to understand what a patient actually needs
  • Recommending lenses, coatings and eyewear technology that solve real visual problems
  • Taking accurate eyewear measurements
  • Creating an enjoyable sales experience without making patients feel pressured
  • Comfortably discussing premium options and additional pairs when they genuinely benefit the patient
  • Entering patient information and laboratory orders accurately
  • Dispensing, adjusting and performing minor repairs on eyewear
  • Troubleshooting eyewear concerns and finding solutions that leave patients happy
  • Working closely with our doctors and team to create a seamless patient experience
  • Learning about new frames, lenses, technology and clinical services
  • Cross-training in other areas of the practice, including myopia management
  • Spotting a problem and thinking “How can I solve this?” rather than “Whose problem is this?”

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • You genuinely enjoy talking to people
  • You're comfortable recommending and selling products
  • You're confident enough to start conversations instead of waiting for people to approach you
  • You're curious and ask good questions
  • You're resourceful—you try to find the answer before declaring something impossible
  • You learn quickly and actually want feedback
  • You're organized and pay attention to details
  • You can multitask in a busy environment
  • You take ownership when something goes wrong
  • You follow through on commitments
  • You're dependable and punctual
  • You're willing to jump into another part of the practice when the team needs help
  • You get along with different personalities and contribute to a positive workplace
  • You can have fun at work while still getting the job done
  • Previous retail, hospitality, optical or customer-facing sales experience is preferred
  • Proven sales ability is a definite advantage
  • Optical experience is an asset, but attitude, aptitude and willingness to learn matter more

YOU'LL PROBABLY LOVE THIS JOB IF...

  • You get a little satisfaction from hitting a goal.
  • You enjoy figuring out what makes people tick.
  • You like being trusted to solve problems.
  • You naturally notice opportunities.
  • You'd rather learn something new than say, “That's not my department.”
  • You like helping someone walk out looking and feeling better than when they came in.
  • And when somebody says, “We've always done it this way,” your brain immediately wonders:
  • “Okay... but is there a better way?”

PERKS

  • No evenings or weekends
  • Closed for a week at Christmas
  • Clothing allowance
  • Dental care
  • Extended health care
  • Vision care
  • Life insurance
  • Disability coverage
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Profit sharing
  • Paid time off
  • Staff education and continuing-learning opportunities
  • Company events
  • Store discount
  • Nicest lunchroom in Port Alberni (we remain prepared to defend this claim)
  • Bike-friendly workplace with shower
How to Apply

Please submit your resume AND cover letter. Applications close October 18th.

In your cover letter, tell us:

What is the best thing you've ever convinced someone to buy, and why did you believe it was right for them?

Also include the words “orange giraffe” somewhere in your cover letter.

If you miss either instruction, we'll assume attention to detail may not be your superpower and your application will head toward the “nope” pile.

We're looking for positive, resourceful, drama-free high performers who enjoy learning, selling and taking ownership of their work.

If that's you, we'd love to meet you.
